Scientists see asteroid hurtle to Earth
It was the first time ever that scientists recovered fragments from an asteroid detected in space, according to the study, published in the British journal Nature.
"Any number of meteorites have been observed as fireballs and smoking meteor trails as they come through the atmosphere," said co-author Douglas Rumble, a researcher at the Carnegie Institution.
"But to actually see this object before it gets to the Earth's atmosphere and then follow it in -- that's the unique thing."
The drama unfolded like an overheated Hollywood script, according to a reconstruction of the event by Nature.
On October 6 last year, an amateur star gazer in Arizona submitted the coordinates of an asteroid he had spotted to the Minor Planet Center in Cambridge , Massachusetts .
It was a routine logging, one of hundreds. But the computer system mysteriously refused additional data, recalled the Center's director, Tim Spahr.
"As soon as I looked at it and did an orbit manually, it was clear it was going to hit Earth," he told the journal.
The size and brightness of the asteroid -- which, by this time, has been assigned the name 2008 TC3 -- did not suggest danger, but Spahr followed standard safety procedure and called a NASA hotline.
He also alerted the Jet Propulsion Laboratory's Steve Chesley, who did a rush calculation on the asteroid's orbit. The program indicated a 100 percent chance of impact.
"I'd never seen that before in my life," he said.
The program also showed that the hurtling mass of rock would hit Earth's atmosphere -- with the force of one or two kilotonnes of TNT -- in less than 13 hours.
Suddenly, scientists accustomed to thinking in light years found themselves scrambling in real time to track the asteroid and figure out where its fragments might land.
Their chatter burned up the Internet and international phone lines. "IMPACT TONIGHT!!!", wrote physicist Mark Boslough of Sandia National Laboratories in New Mexico to colleagues, Nature reported.
Within minutes, it was determined that the asteroid would burst into pieces over the sparsely populated Nubian Desert in northern Sudan .
Tipped off by a meteorologist, a KLM passenger jet pilot flying from Johannesburg to Amsterdam spotted a brilliant flash some 1,400 kilometres distant as 2008 TC3 smashed into the atmosphere at 12,000 metres per second.
Weeks later, Peter Jenniskens, an astronomer at the SETI Institute in Mountain View , California and the study's lead author, was still waiting for the first report of a 2008 TC3 meteorite find. Nothing came.
So Jenniskens flew to Sudan in early December and teamed up with Muawia Hamid Shaddad of Khartoum University .
Together with a small regiment of students, they headed into the desert, asking local inhabitants along the way if they had seen a ball of fire in the sky.
When they zeroed in on the likely crash zone, the researchers fanned out to comb the area. In three days, they recovered 280 fragments weighing a total of several kilogrammes.
2008 TC3 falls into a category of very rare meteorites -- accounting for less than one percent of objects that hit Earth -- called ureilites, all of which may have come from the same parent body, Rumble said.
Being able to match spectral measurements of 2008 TC3 taken before it disintegrated with chemical analyses of the rock fragments should make it easier to recognize ureilite asteroids still in space, he noted.

Chicken Wings - Its Dangerous
A friend of mine recently had a growth in her womb and she underwent an operation to remove the cyst. The cyst removed was filled with a dark colored blood. She thought that she would be recovered after the surgery but she was terribly wrong.
A relapse occurred just a few months later. Distressed , she rushed down to her gynecologist for a consultation.
During her consultation, her doctor asked her a question that puzzled her.
He ask if she was a frequent consumer of chicken wings and she replied yes wondering as to how, he knew of her eating habits. You see, the truth is in this modern day and age; chickens are injected with steroids to accelerate their growth so that the needs of this society can be met.
This need is none other than the need for food.
Chickens that are injected with steroids are usually given the shot at the neck or the wings...
Therefore, it is in these places that the highest concentration of steroids exists.
These steroids have terrifying effects on the body as it accelerates growth..
It has an even more dangerous effect in the presence of female hormones, this leads to women being more prone to the growth of a cyst in the womb. Therefore, I advise the people out there to watch their diets and to lower their frequency of consuming chicken wings!

Earth Hour 2009
Earth Hour is an annual global initiative organised by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) that encourages households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights for one hour in order to raise awareness of climate change. It started in Australia in 2007, and achieved global participation in 2008.
This year, Earth Hour is being taken to the next level, with the goal of 1 billion people switching off their lights. It is a global call to action for every individual, every business, and every community. A call to stand up and take control over the future of our planet. Over 74 countries and territories, including Singapore, have pledged their support to Earth Hour 2009, and this number is growing everyday.
StarHub supports Earth Hour and will do our part by switching off our office lights, and dimming our StarHub Shops and Customer Service Centres on 28 March, from 8:30 - 9:30PM.

MORAL OF THE PROBLEM:
DON'T COMPLICATE SIMPLE PROBLEMS IN LIFE
Nail Care Guide: 10-Minute Manicure
Step 1: Trim and Shape the Nails
Decide what nail shape best complements your hands:
- The current trendy nail shape is short and straight, with the edges like a rounded rectangle.
- Use your the shape of your cuticles as a guide: if they're oval shaped, square-cut nails are suitable choices, but if your cuticles are more pointy, oval-shaped nails work better for you.
- Long tapering nail tips complement delicate-looking hands and long fingers, while heavy-set hands with short fingers and wide nail beds look best with squared-off nails.
- Trim your nails to the appropriate length that will suit your lifestyle and the condition of your nails. They shouldn't be too long if your nails tend to chip or if you always engage in activities that might break your nails.
Step 2: File the Nails
- Filing your nails should even out any rough edges resulted from the trimmings.
- File gently from each corner to centre in one motion.
- Avoid the lazy way of side-to-side filing, which can weaken the nails and cause the nail tips to fray.
- It is best to use a soft, straight file made of sandpaper, rather than a metal file which can be harsh, especially on weak nails.
- Be careful not to file away the skin near the nails, and avoid filing too close to the edge of the nail bed.
Step 3: Push Back Cuticles
- To give your nails a neater appearance, you may want to push the cuticles back with a cuticle stick or orange wood stick.
- First soften the cuticles with some cuticle cream and rub in.
- Use the rounded end of the cuticle stick to gently push your cuticles back toward your skin around the base of the nail.
- You shouldn't need to push too hard. If you find your cuticles hard to push, they have not been softened enough. Re-apply more cuticle cream and wait for 3 minutes before trying again.
- Never attempt to trim the cuticles and this may lead to infection.
Once the cuticles are pushed back, gently wash off any remaining cuticle cream with warm soapy water.
Step 4: Buff and Shine Nails
- Buffing adds a healthy shiny finish to your nails, so don't skip this step.
- Using the roughest part of a three-way nail buffer, move it sideways in a sawing motion across each nail several times. This will exfoliate any rough ridges and stimulate the area underneath the nail to give it a healthy glow.
- Next use the less rough part to sand off any remaining rough spots.
- Finish off with the smooth part to polish your nails for a high shine.
Step 5: Polish the Nails
- Add a layer of top coat to protect the nails.
- Complete with a coating (or two) of lacquer. Or get creative and give yourself a French manicure.

The Last Laugh - GETTING MARRIED
A young man went to his father one day to tell him that he wanted to get married.
His father was happy for him. He asked his son who the girl was, and he told him that it was Samantha, a girl from the neighbourhood.
With a sad face the old man said to his son, ''I'm sorry to say this son but I have to. The girl you want to marry is your sister, but please don't tell your mother.''
The young man again brought 3 more names to his father but ended up frustrated because the response was still the same.
So he decides to go to his mother. ''Mom, I want to get married but all the girls that I love, dad said they are my sisters and I mustn't tell you.''
His mother smiling said to him,"Don't worry my son, you can marry any of those girls... you're NOT his son!!"
