6 Beauty Mistakes That Are Bad For Your Skin

1. Exfoliating too much
Getting rid of dead skin cells helps brighten and soften skin, but sloughing too often or using abrasive scrubs can lead to redness and irritation. Exfoliate just once or twice a week. And choose a chemical exfoliator such as glycolic acid or gentle cleansing beads. Avoid using scrub mitts and exfoliators with an uneven texture, such as walnut shells. Skip the exfoliator if you are using retinoid or AHA products, because these products already have skin sloughing effects themselves.

2. Sleeping with your makeup on
If you come in from a particularly late evening, the last thing you want to do is to wash your face. However, leaving all that dirt, oil and makeup on your face the entire night can set the stage for acne and clogged pores. To make taking it all off simpler, invest in no-rinse face wipes and keep them on your nightstand.

3. Not using sunscreen
Exposure to sun's rays is the primary culprit behind skin aging. You may not notice the effects when you are in your twenties, but as your skin matures, fine lines and dark sports can start to creep in. Even if you're holed up in the office from 9 to 5, you're still susceptible to UV rays because they can penetrate glass windows. To best way to guard against this: Use a sunscreen with at least SPF 15 that's labeled "broad-spectrum", meaning it guards against both UVA and UVB rays.

4. Washing with hot water
Washing your face with hot water strips skin of its natural oils, causing dryness and irritation. The ideal temp is lukewarm. Don't want to give up hot showers? Wash your face first with room-temperature water before you take your steamy bath.

5. Using expired beauty products
Do you keep track of the use-by dates of your makeup and skincare products? Most women haven't a clue. Which spells bad news, because these are things you apply directly on your face. Products past their shelf life can become ineffective or worse, harbor bacteria that can potentially trigger an infection or breakout. Mascaras, for example, should be discarded 6 months after opening. Retinoids and AHAs are effective for 3 months to a year, while antioxidant skincare with vitamin C lasts 6 months. If you are using preservative-free products, you should be extra vigilant as these have a much shorter shelf life.

6. Neglecting your neck
Most of us won't hesitate splurging on the best skincare for our face, but we tend to forget about lavishing the same TLC on our neck. Skin around the neck area is just as delicate as our face's and requires equal attention. When you're applying moisturizer and sunscreen, don't forget to slather it on your neck and decolletage, too.

What Do Your Shoes Say About You?

Classic pumps
Classic pumps are the staple accessories of a successful professional woman. "Your values are basic: Work hard, get paid well, use your brain, value your family and friends, and give back," says Meghan Cleary, author of The Perfect Fit. You are also intelligent, reliable and a loyal friend.

Complete the look: Get down to business with a few classic pant- and skirt-suits in neutral black, gray, navy and khaki that you can mix and match. Top off your ensemble with simple, timeless jewelry -- a pair of pearl or diamond studs, an understated ring or necklace.

Stilettoes
Strut your stuff, girl! If there's one word to sum up your attitude, it's confidence. "You embrace your raw female power, stepping out smartly, never afraid to state what you want," says Cleary. You're a modern woman, but you're also a traditional girl at heart. "An intriguing mix of traditional and modern, deep down you believe in the fact that men provide and women look good."

Complete the look: For work, opt for close-toe stilettoes with an A-line slim-fitting skirt and matching tapered jacket and neatly tucked-in blouse. For a vampy night out, team strappy heels with a sexy black LBD or skinny jeans and tee on a weekend day.

Sneakers
"The Sneaker girl is all about cool, but very accessible cool," explains Cleary. You're also very witty, and often pepper your conversation with a bit of ironic or sarcastic humor just for effect.

Complete the look: Try something vintage, like a flared-leg pants with boho tee to go with your sneakers. Add a pop of color with a bright-hued messenger bag.

Mary-janes
Women who wear these girly shoes like order and neatness in all things, according to Cleary. But boring you're not! Beneath your prim and proper exterior, you're the quintessential girly girl, and have a great sense of playfulness.

Complete the look: Pair your mary-janes with a crisp blouse and skirt ensemble and accessorize with matching pearl necklace and earrings.

Open-toes
Peep-toe shoes are synonymous with natural flirts. Subtlety is sexy, but you already knew it! "Wherever you are off to, you usually make a sassy entrance with your shiny open-toe heels that tilt you just a little forward, put an extra zing in your walk, and give onlookers a tiny peek of the toe cleavage."

Complete the look: Show off your shape in a fitted V-neck blouse and a full, waist-accentuating skirt matched with a pair of sexy peep-toes.

Cowboy boots
Cowboy boot girls are inherently confident ladies. They know what they like and follow their passion instead of conforming to stereotypes. They also have an intensity that run deep: "Your penetrating eyes get to the bottom of things, even in the most casual conversation," says Cleary.

Complete the look: Complement those boots with boho "The No. 1 wardrobe essential for you should be jeans," says Cleary. Try a hip-hugging, low-riding denim to show off your womanly curves. Or team with a long, flowing dress or skirt for boho-chic.

5 Traits Successful Weight Losers Share

Losing the weight isn't easy, but keeping it off is even harder -- 95 percent of dieters regain what they lost within three years. How did the other 5 percent maintain their newer, slimmer size? Steal their secrets!

Weigh in once a week
Several studies have shown that checking in with your bathroom scale on a regular basis helps keep the pounds away. The reason: When you catch any small gain early on, you can more easily undo the damage with a slight adjustment in diet and exercise.

There's no need to hop on the scale everyday, though; weighing in once a week is fine, says American Heart Association, or try keeping track of inches lost instead of pounds.

Strive for five fruit and veggie servings
Women who ate the most fruit and vegetable servings (at least five a day) were 60 percent more likely to ward off weight regain than those who consumed fewer servings, according to a study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).Fresh produce typically is loaded with fiber and water, which tends to make a meal feel larger and keep you full longer."Since it can also take up to 24 hours for high-fiber foods to pass through your digestive tract, they can help control your appetite -- and calorie intake -- for up to a day," explains Stephen Gullo, Ph.D., author of The Thin Commandments.

Outsmart diet pitfalls at work
Almost 55 percent of people who experienced pound rebound after weight loss blamed office culture as a diet saboteur, according to research at the University of Kansas at Kansas City Medical Center. Some ways to beat on-the-job weight gain: Stash light snacks such as fiber-rich cereal bar or a single-serving pack of nuts in your desk and reach for it when you have the mid-afternoon munchies instead of the high-calorie snacks at the vending machine. To avoid overindulgence at business lunches, have a light bite before you meet with clients.

Clock in 30 minutes of exercise every day
Coupled with healthy eating, moderate to vigorous exercise helps keep the weight off for good. You're twice as likely to stay trim if you get 30 to 60 minutes of activity on most days of the week than those who don't, according to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study. You'll maintain lean muscle mass when you work out regularly, which means you'll burn energy even at rest. Plus, you'll be able to give in to the occasional slice of cake without putting on the weight.

Ditch the fast food
People who swear off fast food entirely are 62 percent more likely to maintain their trim shape than than those who eat it at least twice a week.On days when you're eating out, opt for healthier, lower-fat choices -- look for the words "baked", "broiled", "grilled", "dry-sauteed", "poached" or "steamed" on the menu. Select entrees with fruits and vegetables as key ingredients, and go for broth-based soups instead of cream-based ones which are higher in fat and calories.Preparing your own meals, however, is still the best way to ensure you're eating foods that are low in fat and calories. Try a low-calorie or low-fat cookbook for tasty yet nutritious recipes.

Are You Dressing Too Sexy for Work?

What's Smart for the Boardroom

Tops: Blouses can be stylish but should be modest enough to cover up the cleavage, shoulders, back and midriff. Avoid overly sheer fabrics: Good fabric choices are silk, rayon, and cotton-polyester blends. Experiment with different styles that complement your shape, but stay away from anything that clings like second skin.

Skirts: Skirts can be just above the knee, but no shorter. Tailored A-line or pencil skirts are classics, but you can also inject a touch of fun into your work attire by wearing skirts that feature floral prints, subtle beadings or embellishments.

Pants: Go for dressy, tailored pants in neutral colors with a mid-rise or higher. Pants should be fitted, but not too tight, and should not show visible panty lines.

Dresses: Look for tailored dresses with full coverage such as shirt dresses and wrap-dresses. For dresses that are a tad more revealing (like sun dresses or halter-styles), layer up with a cropped jacket or cardigan for a professional look. The cut should be relaxed but not too fitted. Hemlines should hit around or just above the knee.

Shoes: Shoes should be close-toed, and heels should be no higher than two inches. Opt for neutral colors and classic designs. Standard pumps and kitten heels are safe bets.

What's Way Too Sexy for the Workplace

Blouses that reveal too much skin such as cleavage- or midriff-baring tops and spaghetti straps. Layer with a longer camisole underneath or throw on a cardigan or jacket for cover-up.

Overly sheer or shiny fabrics such as see-through lace and head-to-toe metallic ensemble.

Clothes with extremely fitting cuts, including figure-hugging tops and hip-hugging pants.

Exposed bra straps and visible panty lines.

Skirts and dresses that end more than one hand-width above the knee or with revealing side slits. If you're going for an above-the-knee skirt or dress, pair with opaque stockings or leggings for a more professional look.

Pants with a low rise or hip-huggers that expose the midriff.

Dresses with revealing necklines such as halter, deep-V neck or low-back dresses.

Sky-high stilettos or anything with heels higher than two inches.

Shoes with open toes, strappy sandals or overly bright colors.

Nail Care Guide: 10-Minute Manicure

Quick-and-easy manicure you can give yourself at home.

Step 1: Trim and Shape the Nails
Decide what nail shape best complements your hands:

- The current trendy nail shape is short and straight, with the edges like a rounded rectangle.

- Use your the shape of your cuticles as a guide: if they're oval shaped, square-cut nails are suitable choices, but if your cuticles are more pointy, oval-shaped nails work better for you.

- Long tapering nail tips complement delicate-looking hands and long fingers, while heavy-set hands with short fingers and wide nail beds look best with squared-off nails.

- Trim your nails to the appropriate length that will suit your lifestyle and the condition of your nails. They shouldn't be too long if your nails tend to chip or if you always engage in activities that might break your nails.

Step 2: File the Nails

- Filing your nails should even out any rough edges resulted from the trimmings.

- File gently from each corner to centre in one motion.

- Avoid the lazy way of side-to-side filing, which can weaken the nails and cause the nail tips to fray.

- It is best to use a soft, straight file made of sandpaper, rather than a metal file which can be harsh, especially on weak nails.

- Be careful not to file away the skin near the nails, and avoid filing too close to the edge of the nail bed.

Step 3: Push Back Cuticles

- To give your nails a neater appearance, you may want to push the cuticles back with a cuticle stick or orange wood stick.

- First soften the cuticles with some cuticle cream and rub in.

- Use the rounded end of the cuticle stick to gently push your cuticles back toward your skin around the base of the nail.

- You shouldn't need to push too hard. If you find your cuticles hard to push, they have not been softened enough. Re-apply more cuticle cream and wait for 3 minutes before trying again.

- Never attempt to trim the cuticles and this may lead to infection.
Once the cuticles are pushed back, gently wash off any remaining cuticle cream with warm soapy water.

Step 4: Buff and Shine Nails

- Buffing adds a healthy shiny finish to your nails, so don't skip this step.

- Using the roughest part of a three-way nail buffer, move it sideways in a sawing motion across each nail several times. This will exfoliate any rough ridges and stimulate the area underneath the nail to give it a healthy glow.

- Next use the less rough part to sand off any remaining rough spots.

- Finish off with the smooth part to polish your nails for a high shine.

Step 5: Polish the Nails

- Add a layer of top coat to protect the nails.

- Complete with a coating (or two) of lacquer. Or get creative and give yourself a French manicure.

Eye Makeup Makeovers

if you have... Small eyes

HOW-TO: To open tiny peepers, use light to medium shades of eyeshadow. Stay away from dark shadows which will confine the eyes and make them appear even smaller.

1. Prime eyes with base, then sweep a pale iridescent shade over the eyelid to brighten and enlarge your eyes. Shade along the outer half of the lid using a darker shade, then apply highlighter just under your brow arch.

2. Define the outer corner of your upper and lower lash lines with an eyeliner, extending the line outwards to add lift.

3. Apply two coats of lash-lengthening mascara. Curl lashes between coatings to open up your eyes.

if you have...Wide-set eyes

HOW-TO: To create the illusion of decreased width, use more intense eye color and a heavier hand on the inner corners of the eyes.

1. Prep eyes with a thin layer of foundation, then dust on a medium-toned color on the inner corner of your lid then blend outwards.

2. Use a slightly darker shade along the crease, depositing color on the inner corner, then blend outwards.

3. With an eyeliner, outline the inner corner of your lash line, then blend towards the outer end.

4. Apply lashings of mascara, making sure your inner lashes are coated with ample mascara.
