Lower Your Blood Pressure in Just 3 Hours a Week
Water aerobics reduce hypertension and are perfect for people with orthopedic problems
March 8, 2012 | By Larissa Long, Contributing Editor, Peak Health Advocate
Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is one of the top health concerns not only in the United States, but around the world. In fact, researchers expect that the number of people worldwide with hypertension will increase to an astounding 1.56 billion by 2025![1]
A blood pressure reading contains two numbers. The top number is the systolic pressure — the measure of blood pressure in the arteries when the heart is beating. The bottom number is the diastolic pressure — the blood pressure in the arteries in between beats, when the heart is relaxed.
Hypertension is defined as a systolic pressure of 140 mmHg or more, and/or a diastolic pressure of 90 mmHg or more. And having high blood pressure puts you at a considerably greater risk for stroke, cardiovascular disease and other heart-related problems.
Exercise the Hypertension Away
The best and most effective way to lower high blood pressure naturally is through exercise. Many studies have examined exercises like walking, jogging/running, and bicycling, and found that each of these workouts can lead to a significant reduction in blood pressure in people with hypertension. However, not many studies have looked at the impact of swimming or water workouts on blood pressure.
One would beg to reason that swimming is a form of aerobic exercise, therefore it would, in fact, help to lower blood pressure. But some studies have suggested that swimming might not be all that effective in reducing resting blood pressure, partly because the blood pressure of trained swimmers, as a whole, is higher than the blood pressure of other endurance athletes. (Researchers note several things could cause this, including holding the breath underwater, water temperature, and the supine position used while swimming.)
So, considering the lack of research on water workouts and hypertension, one study aimed to find out what, if any, effect this type of exercise had on blood pressure.[2]
Forty men with mild to moderate hypertension (blood pressure between 140/90 mmHg and 180/110 mmHg) were divided into two groups: intervention and control. Both groups were advised to make heart-healthy lifestyle adjustments — in particular, to lose weight, limit salt intake, and cease smoking and drinking. In addition, the men in the intervention group participated in a 10-week water aerobics program for 55 minutes, three times a week.
Blood pressure in the test subjects was measured at baseline, and again 48 hours after the last water workout session so that researchers could avoid the acute effects of the exercise (temporarily higher blood pressure).
At the end of the study, researchers discovered that the 10-week water aerobic session lowered the systolic and mean arterial (average) blood pressure of the test group by 11.71 mmHg and 5.9 mmHg, respectively.
According to a prior published study, a 5 mmHg reduction in systolic pressure “would result in a 14 percent overall reduction in mortality due to stroke, a 9 percent reduction in mortality due to coronary heart disease, and a 7 percent decrease in all-cause mortality.”[3]
So the 11.71 mmHg decrease in systolic pressure thanks to water aerobics is double those percentages!
Less of an effect was seen on diastolic pressures, but researchers noted that systolic pressure is the more important risk factor in those over age 50, and more people in the over-50 age group suffer from cardiovascular disease than any other group.
So, with that, they concluded that water workouts do, in fact, have a significant effect on hypertension, and this type of exercise is an excellent option for people who are overweight, elderly or have orthopedic problems.
Make Water Workouts Work for You
If you suffer from hypertension or cardiovascular disease, water workouts are a fun way to exercise your heart and lower high blood pressure naturally. If you don’t have a pool of your own, consider joining your local YMCA or a gym that has an indoor pool. These places almost always offer swimming lessons and/or water aerobics classes.
Remember, you don’t have to be an avid swimmer to take advantage of the heart benefits of water workouts. Simply walking from one side of the shallow end to the other can get your heart pumping and blood flowing. So jump in and get moving!

A Vegetarian Cat Called Liberation

There was a story in the papers about a special temple cat in South Korea.

This cat was found as a kitten with burnt injuries 4 yrs ago by the abbot. The abbot saved it and gave it a Dharma name "Liberation". She also gave the kitten 3 precepts for staying in the monastery:

1) to refrain from making noise in the temple
2) to refrain from eating meat and
3) to refrain from killing.

Amazingly the kitten could understand the instructions and has never violated the precepts since then.

In addition, the cat spent hours everyday in the temple venerating the Buddha, leaving reluctantly only for its strictly vegetarian meal.

Escaping The Price-Driven Sale

WHO WILL BENEFIT FROM THIS TRAINING?

This will benefit you, your Sales team and your organization if you are facing some of the following situations:

  1. The first topic that customers bring up when in a sales conversation is price
  2. Sales team members get “sucked” into the price-driven sales conversation and do not know how to get out of it
  3. Sales team members try to justify for the higher price charged citing reasons as product quality, value added services and so on
  4. Customers get the price reduction when they “threaten” to pass the order to a competitor unless the sales representative matches the price
  5. Sales team members reduce the price even though they may not have to for fear of losing the sales volume
  6. The sales person is not able get the customer to understand the value his product or service provides
  7. Sometimes, the sales manager over-rides the sales person who has declined to reduce price but the customers know the discretion the sales manager has and gets it from him
  8. Sales team members really BELIEVE that the customers use pricing as the only factor to make decisions
  1. Not able to command a premium price even though product/service is superior to competitors
  2. Sales personnel allow their products to be treated like a commodity
  3. Customers do not bother or care about the good technical support or customer service that they are getting—all they are interested in is the price
  4. Sales people speak as if their salaries are paid by the customers and not their employers!

Goodbye Android Market, Hello Google Play

Google’s Android Market has undergone some tremendous changes over the last year or so. What started as just a standalone app store has quickly grown to encompass e-books, music, videos, and now Google feels like the “Android Market” moniker is getting to be too restrictive, too constraining for what they’re really trying to deliver to their users.

That’s why Google is officially putting the Android Market name to rest. Starting today, all of Google’s digital media services have been rebranded to fly under a brand new banner: Google Play. That’s right gadget buffs, despite some delectable new rumors Google Play isn’t a new tablet from the folks at Mountain View, but rather a unified brand that seeks to tie the company’s digital media services together.

According to Google Engineering Director Chris Yerga, the rebranding was something Google has been contemplating for quite some time, but the company felt that this was the “natural time” to pull the trigger.

Google has spent months and months building out the Android Market into a digital media hub, but constantly invoking the Android name seems to have led to a sense of exclusion for some users. There’s nothing about the process of renting movies, purchasing music, or skimming through e-books from Google that requires anyone interested to actually own an Android device. All of a user’s pertinent media is stored in Google’s considerable cloud and accessible from run-of-the-mill web browsers, and Google wants to drive that point home with the new Google Play brand.

As the rebrand goes live, you’ll see that most of Google’s new cosmetic efforts come into play on the web. The Android Market website has been drastically revamped to place more emphasis on the rest of the digital media that Google offers users — instead of occupying small, easy to miss tabs along the top of the page, links to Google’s Books, Music, and Video subsections and related offers now occupy prime real estate at eye-level.

That isn’t to say that changes won’t take place on your Android device of choice too. The venerable Android Market will be renamed the Google Play Store, while similar name changes will go into effect for Google’s slew of playback apps — the Google Music app for example will now be called Google Play Music. Simple enough, right? In usual Google fashion, the updates for the affected apps will go live today and will continue to roll out over the next few days.

That’s pretty much it as far as changes to the device side go — Android users have been able to access Google’s catalog of books, movies, and songs from within the Android Market app ever since their most recent design change went into effect.

This new focus on uniting Google’s digital media services on the web underscores a key concept that the search giant is hoping to drive home — the media ecosystem that they’ve created isn’t just meant for Android devices, but for users of all stripes. Yerga tells me that Google’s intent with Google Play was to not only break down the “silos” that Google’s content types were lumped into, but also to “break down the barriers between content consumption and the store experience.” Sadly, there’s no word yet if devices like Google TV units (or the mysterious Google home boxes currently in testing) will be able to enjoy the new Play media hub.

Your experience with Google Play will also vary depending on where you’re located. Quoth the Official Google Blog:

In the U.S., music, movies, books and Android apps are available in Google Play. In Canada and the U.K., we’ll offer movies, books and Android apps; in Australia, books and apps; and in Japan, movies and apps. Everywhere else, Google Play will be the new home for Android apps.
